I did it! It takes some courage to chop off your hair if you’ve grown it carefully to a considerable length. And it will take my about three years to grow it back again. However, I don’t regret it at all.
Why You Should Donate Your Hair
Maybe you know somebody who struggles with hair loss. Or you have a relative who lost all the hair due to chemotherapy. Either way, losing your hair must be a terrible feeling. Especially as a woman, I guess. Because for women, their hair is a symbol of femininity, or at least it is for me. Just imagine yourself in a situation like this, where you gradually lose more and more hair.
Donating Hair Doesn’t Hurt
It won’t hurt you physically or you won’t be exhausted like after donating blood. And most important, it will grow back again.
(Almost) Everybody Can Donate Hair
The Swiss company I donated my hair had the requirement that it should be a hair braid of at least 20 cm. In addition, the hair shouldn’t be coloured. But apart from those two requirements, it doesn’t matter if you have layers or if your hair already has some split ends. One bonus of hair donating is that it doesn’t matter if you’re sick or have an autoimmune disease. For me personally, this was a great way to be helping others. Because due to my rheumatism, I’m unfortunately not allowed to donate blood.
How Does It Work?
It’s actually quite simple:
- Wash and dry your hair before you go to the hairdresser
- Bring along some hair ties (at least two, more are better if one breaks)
- Ask your hairdresser to comb and afterwards braid your hair nicely
- Place a hair tie in the beginning and in the end of the braid
- Show them where you’d like to cut them off (keep in mind that the braid should have a certain length)
- And now you deserve a nice new haircut 🙂
Just take into consideration that the hairdresser needs to correct the haircut. So after cutting off the braid the hairdresser has to chop off some centimetres for a nice haircut.
Where Can I Donate?
After you hold your braid in your hand you can send it to a company which makes wigs. Here are some addresses:
United States: http://www.locksoflove.org/
Great Britain: http://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/donate-hair/
Just keep in mind to check the conditions as they are different from company to company.
If you know another good company which offers this service, please feel free to leave a link in the description.
